Harold Vern Askew "Papa"December 25, 1924 ~ March 23, 2017 (age 92)
Harold Vern Askew ("Papa"), 92, passed away on March 23, 2017 at Wesley Village in Macomb, Illinois. Harold was born at his home on a farm near Dalgren, Illinois, on December 25, 1924 to Farrel and Bessie Askew. He was a graduate of Good Hope High School and married Mary Ilene Albert of Roseville, Illinois, on February 17, 1947 at the Roseville Christian Church. They were married in a double ceremony with Mary’s sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Dale Tate.
Harold and Mary were nearly inseparable during their 67 years of marriage. He lived most of his life as a farmer in rural Good Hope and retired at age 62. A loving father and grandfather, Harold was happiest with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was also very involved in his community. Harold was a longtime member of the Good Hope United Methodist Church, a leader of the Center Stars 4-H Club, a Past Patron of the Good Hope Order of the Eastern Star, a Past Master of the Good Hope Masonic Lodge, and a member of the Peoria Shriners. Harold was also an avid Sleepy Eye Pottery collector and loved to travel.
Harold made many friends over his lifetime and had visitors up through his last weeks. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Wesley Village for the love and care they provided for him and Mary.
Harold was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Albert) Askew, parents, sister, Twila (Askew) Anderson, and son-in-law, James Ingledue. He is survived by his two children, Terry (LuAnn) Askew of Henderson, Nevada, and Karen Ingledue of Macomb, Illinois. Harold is survived by five grandchildren: Troy (Monika) Askew, Chad (Lori) Sperry, Brad Askew, Kristi (Shawn) Williams, Darin (Kelly) Askew and seven great grandchildren: Isabel Sperry, Eli Sperry, Brady Williams, Bailey Williams, Carson Askew, Noah Askew, Kylie Askew, Tate Askew, and Izabella Askew.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 26, from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb, Illinois. Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Maple Avenue Christian Church. Reverend Donnie Case will officiate and burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Macomb. A funeral luncheon for friends and family will be served afterwards at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to Wesley Village of Macomb or McDonough District Hospital Hospice.
