Veta Marie (Maynard) HarperJuly 8, 1924 ~ December 5, 2017 (age 93)
Veta Marie (Maynard) Harper, 93, of Macomb, formerly of Good Hope passed away at 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at her residence.
Veta was born on July 8, 1924, on a farm near LaClede, Linn County, Missouri to Lloyd M. and Velma M. (Griswold) Manard. She moved with her family in 1930 to the home of her grandparents, Abednego and Electa (Fredrick) Manard where her father was involved in farming with his parents at Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois. She attended Primrose Grade School northwest of Camp Point, Kingman Grade School at Peoria, and graduated 8th grade from Bethel Grade School south of Fandon. She attended Macomb High School, graduating from Woodruff High School at Peoria, and attended Western Illinois University, Macomb.
She married Delbert Matthew Harper at the First Baptist Church, Macomb, September 21, 1947. He went to be with our Lord in 1998. They farmed on the Proctor Endowment Farm, 25 years. While farming she drove the tractor in the various farming operations and assisted with harvesting, raised a garden and chickens, did canninig, and sewed for her children. Later they purchased a home in the country west of Good Hope and owned Captain Clean Professional Cleaning Service which specialized in catastrophe cleaning.
Surviving are four daughters, Kathryn (Michael) Waters, Leesburg, Florida, Marilyn (Ron) Smith, Macomb, Debra (Eldon) Derry, Industry and Melinda Lea (Dan) Horton, Lomax; eight grandchildren, Chad (Julie) Waters, Jon (Nikki) Harper, Ashley Derry, Justin (Kenzie) Derry, Amanda (Lewis) Mohr, Danielle (Jeremy) Knowles, April (Seth) Berlett and Jessica Horton; two step-granddaughters, Jennifer Derry and Kimberly (Dan) Cleary; and eleven great-grandchildren, Levi and Phoebe Harper, Hailey, Makayla and Xavier James, Isaac, Ethan and Audrey Mohr, Addlyn and Aiden Knowles and Alexa Berlett. Also surviving are a brother, Delbert C. Manard and a nephew, Joe Manard; three sisters-in-law, Faun (Harper) Cramer, Joan (Harper) Lovejoy, and Ruth Harper and many Harper/Manard nieces, nephews and cousins who were all very dear to her.
Preceding her in death are her parents; husband; a son, Dwight Matthew Harper; a sister, Katherine LaVerne Manard; two brothers, Robert Griswold Manard and Lloyd Melvin Manard, Jr., a niece Joan Manard; and a sister-in-law, Wanda June Manard.
She worked 4 years in the office of Globe American Corporation, Macomb, wrote newspaper articles 14½ years for Blandinsville Star Gazette, and worked as a secretary at First Baptist Church, Macomb, retiring in 2004, a job she thoroughly enjoyed.
She is a past member of the McDonough County Single Rural Youth. She is a member of McDonough County Married Rural youth which she and her husband helped organize. She is a past member of the Sciota Home Bureau Extension Unit, and the Sciota Household Science Club of which she served in offices and committees.
She is a member of the McDonough County Genealogical Society and served 3 years as its secretary. She is a 72 year member of the Sciota Rebekah Lodge #95, Past Noble Grand, past secretary, Warden, and presently serving as Vice Grand and served on various committees.
She enjoyed traveling, writing letters, photography, reading, doing embroidery, square dancing, roller skating and skated on her 80th birthday. She enjoyed working with her Sciota 4-H Club members and as a leader for 36 years, playing 10-point pitch, and other games with friends. She did family genealogy and worked with a cousin, Allan Baumbach on one line. She appreciated all the kind acts and thoughtfulness that her neighbors and friends bestowed on her in her later years.
She is a 73 year member of the First Baptist Church, Macomb, taught Sunday School 32 years in childrens department and then served as a substitute teacher 8 years for children and adult classes, past member of Naomi Missionary Circle, served on the Fellowship Committee, and many years on the News Committee. She served 9 years on the Deacon Board, an honor that was opened to the ladies of the Church to serve their Lord in this capacity. The past 20 years she has written encouraging letters twice a month to shut-ins and those who were ill. She worked 10 years with Virgil Kelly in the Church Puppet Ministry. She loved attending Church, being with her family, grandchildren and friends.
Serving her Lord Jesus had first place in her life. If you do not have her Lord in your life, she asks you accept Him by faith and meet her in eternity.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 8, 2017 at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb with Pastor Claudia McCain officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Macomb.
Memorials may be made to either the First Baptist Church in Macomb or Lafayette Square.
