Eileen Lucille Clemens Snowden, 101, a resident of Wesley Village, Macomb passed away at 10:12 a.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at Wesley Village.
She was born on February 19, 1918 near Ipava, Illinois to Guy and Kathryn (Stevenson) Clemens. She met Eldon Miller Snowden in 1940 and they were married on June 12, 1943 in Augusta. At the time Eldon was serving in the US Army, and was sent to England shortly after the wedding where he remained for three years.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Kathryn Clemens; her sisters, Audrey Pelz and Gaye Fleisher; and her husband of 72 years, Eldon “Ben” Miller Snowden.
She is survived by her daughters, Cynthia S. Stephens of Macomb and Dena K. Snowden of Savannah, Georgia; granddaughters, Jenna A. Doyle (Dave) of Davenport, Iowa and Danielle D. Snowden of Atlanta, Georgia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Eileen attended rural schools near Ipava, graduating from Table Grove High School in 1935. She graduated from Western Illinois University with a Bachelors degree in July, 1942 and a Masters degree in June, 1962. She began her teaching career directly out of high school, teaching in local area one-room schools. Her parents relocated to Augusta, Illinois in 1944 when the Clemens family farm near Ipava was seized by the government for the development of the World War II Army Service Forces Unit Training Center and prisoner-of-war camp, Camp Ellis. Eileen continued teaching in the Augusta/Bowen area. After Eldon went to England for the war, Eileen continued her teaching career and retired in 1978 from Bushnell-Prairie City Schools.
Eileen was active in the Macomb Methodist Church as well as the Retired Teachers Association and the Meadowbrook Homeowners Association. Eileen and Eldon both enjoyed traveling, taking yearly summer vacations with their family all over the US, and many international trips after they retired. Her love of plants and gardening was evident to anyone passing Eldon and Eileen’s home in Meadowbrook, and both were recognized by the Meadowbrook Homeowners Association for “dedicated and exceptional service, 1978-2006.”
