Josephine (“Josie”) Bartus, age 94, passed away at her daughter’s home in Macomb on June 3, 2019, after a lengthy health battle. Josie was born in Chicago on Nov. 30, 1924, the 13th and last child of Stefan and Antonina (Czyzewski) Janoszewski, hard-working, Polish immigrants who had settled on the southeast side of Chicago in the early 1900s. Josie grew up during the Depression and World War II and had to forego formal education beyond the eighth grade in order to support her mother, especially after her father died in 1945.
In Oct. 1948, after a short courtship, Josie married Frank Bartus in Chicago, and they later had two daughters, Bernadine (Bernie) and Diane. Frank died suddenly on May 30, 1985.
During her married years in Chicago, Josie served and cared for numerous family members, including her in laws and her mother and several siblings. She kept active all of her life and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed many activities, from bowling to bingo, from baking to baseball, including cheering on the Chicago Cubs. She volunteered at church-sponsored functions (St. Bronislava bingo) and at school activities. She was tireless. Bernie called her “the Energizer Bunny.”
When Josie moved to McDonough County in 2007, she made new friends and “adopted” her grandsons’ friends as her surrogate grandchildren. Everyone came to know and love “Busi” and her warm smile, as well as her delicious cakes, pies, and cookies.
Over the last year, when ill health forced her to slow down, Josie was tended to at home by her family, by many loving caregivers in Macomb (Mary, Maureen, Susan, Becky, and Sharon), and by her very capable medical care providers in Macomb and Springfield.
Surviving to mourn her loss are her daughters and sons-in-law, Bernadine Bartus (Robert W. Davis) of Decatur, IL, and Diane (Robert D.) Vine, currently of Macomb, IL; her grandsons Neil (Mikala) Fulsang of Vicenza, Italy, and Joel (Brittney) Fulsang of Wasilla, Alaska; her step-granddaughter, Brandie (Oscar) Martinez of Rolling Meadows, IL; her many nieces and nephews; and other extended family members. By far, the light of her life were her great-grandchildren, Madelyn Grace and Logan James Fulsang. She was looking forward to meeting the newest addition in September – Rowan Vern.
A local funeral service will be held on June 13, 2019, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 2000 W. Adams in Macomb (11 am-12 noon visitation; 12 noon funeral). Because of Josie’s many family and friends in the Chicago area, a second service will be held on June 14, 2019, at Our Lady of Knock Catholic Church, 501 163rd Street, Calumet City, IL (Phone: 708-862-3011) (1-2 pm visitation; 2 pm Mass of Christian Burial). Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery (Section 17) in Calumet City, IL.
Memorials may be made in Josie’s memory to OSF Hospice in Galesburg, IL. Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
