Joyce Marie Norcross Howe, a longtime Macomb resident, passed away on Mothers Day, May 13, 2018 at 9:21 a.m. It was a day that was always very special to her given the important role that being a mother, and later a grandmother, played in her life. She died in Sunnyvale, CA at the age of 83 after battling complications brought on by giant cell arteritis while vacationing in Florida.
Joyce was born on January 9, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio to former Bushnell residents Dalton and Julia Lay. She moved from Toledo to Bushnell during high school and was a 1953 graduate of Bushnell-Prairie City High School and a graduate of Gem City Business College in Quincy, IL, spending the rest of her life as a resident of Western Illinois.
Joyce was caring, giving and loyal. She was always there for her family, in good times and in bad, with kind words, love and support. She was dedicated to her friends and also enjoyed dining and dancing with them at favorite Macomb institutions such as the Macomb Country Club, The Red Ox, Magnoilas, The Macomb Dining Company, Damones, The Frontier Room and others that have come and gone during her 50+ years in Macomb. Joyce had an appreciation for the arts and was an active member of the Bureau of Cultural Affairs at Western Illinois University for many years as well as a supporter of the Western Illinois University Leatherneck Club and other clubs and groups both at WIU and also the Macomb school district. A bookkeeper at heart, Joyce was meticulously well organized and could recall the location of any file or record in her office within seconds of sitting down in front of her vintage typewriter that she used since her secretarial days at C.S. Norcross & Sons, the Bushnell-based manufacturing company, in the 1960s.
Joyce is survived by her husband Leland Howe of Macomb, IL, whom she married on May 29, 2010; her son Chipp Norcross, his wife Alexandra and grandsons Luc-Alexander and Max-Noel of Menlo Park, CA; and her son Robert Norcross and granddaughter Riley of Naples, FL. She was preceded in death by her first husband Charles E. Norcross of Macomb, IL and her parents Dalton and Julia Lay of Macomb, IL.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home at 303 E. Washington St., Macomb, IL and will be presided over by Rev. Elissa M. Bailey from the First United Presbyterian Church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the time of the services.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for memorial contributions to be made in Joyces memory. A Go Fund Me campaign has been created with all donations going to the support of the study and awareness of delirium in hospitalized senior citizens. Delirium affects an estimated 80% of senior citizens who are treated in intensive care units and is frequently misdiagnosed and mistreated as dementia. To donate, visit www.gofundme.com and search for "Joyce Norcross Howe Memorial" Alternatively, you can make a donation in her memory directly to the First United Presbyterian Church in Bushnell, Ill. where she and Leland were married on May 29,2010.
