Thomas Russell Ashwood, 97, of Macomb formerly of rural Vermont passed away at 12:39 p.m. Monday, April 16, 2018 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.
He was born on October 29, 1920 in Eldorado Township to Thomas Glenn and Golda Rae Billingsley Ashwood. He married Carmen Kost on November 16, 1947. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Susan (John) Kissick of Quincy; one son Stephen (Janice) Ashwood of Macomb,five grandchildren, J. Thomas (Katie) Bailey, Barbara Ashwood and husband Matt Haslam, John (Ashley) Ashwood, Elizabeth Kissick and Loka Ashwood and husband Jason Prendergast; seven great-grandchildren, Thomas Ashwood, Olivia Bailey, Ava Ashwood, J.D. Bailey, Brianna Ashwood, Michael Lee Ashwood-Prendergast and Madeleine Ashwood-Haslam; one nephew, Al Jennings and one niece, Christine Mindick.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Madelyn Bennett.
Thomas was a graduate of University of Illinois and World War II veteran. He was a pilot, having flown B-24 and B-29 aircraft during the war.
Thomas farmed all of his life in McDonough County. He was a member of the American Legion in Vermont, Vermont Christian Church, McDonough County Farm Bureau, President of Industry School Board, and had been awarded the Conservation Family of the year. "Bud" was an avid reader of history and current events. He and Carmen loved to travel the byways of the lower 48 states. They had celebrated 70 years of marriage. As many of their generation they learned fiscal responsibility from the Depression and WWII. He valued hard work, family and his wifes cherry pie.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Private burial of ashes will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Vermont Fire and Rescue or Industry Fire and Rescue
Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb is in charge of arrangements.
