Thomas (Tom) L. Powell, 71, of Macomb, IL. passed away at 9:11 p.m. Monday December 16, 2019 surrounded by his family. He was the eldest child of George P. and Velda M. (Westermeyer) Powell born November 11, 1948 in Chenoa, IL.
He is survived by three children, Brett (Angie) Powell of Poplar Bluff, MO; Drew (Ashley Buck) Powell of Carbondale, IL; Jennifer (Dace VanBrooker) Powell of Macomb, IL; five grandchildren, Dakota, Marshall, Madison, Owen, Quinn; three great grandchildren, and one sister Jorj Ann (Tom) Higgins of Chenoa, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister Jane (Powell) Casson of Fairbury, IL.
Upon graduating from Chenoa High School Tom enlisted in the United States Navy serving in Vietnam. After returning from military service Tom attended Western Illinois University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice. Tom went to become an OPS officer at Western Illinois University before deciding to make a career with the Ninth Judicial Circuit of Illinois where he worked as Trial Court Administrator and Director of Court Services. Tom retired from the Ninth Circuit in 2000.
Tom loved spending time with his family and friends. Many would often refer to him as a “social butterfly” and that was an accurate description. Tom enjoyed talking to anyone about anything and it didn’t matter if that person was a lifelong friend or someone he had just met while having coffee. Tom grew up as an avid hunter and kept that passion throughout his life. He passed his love for the outdoors on to his children by taking them hunting and fishing. The thing that Tom cherished most was spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In honor of Tom’s wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be held from 12 to 3 p.m. on January 18, 2020 at VFW Post 1921 in Macomb, IL. Military rites will be conducted at the VFW at noon by the Macomb VFW and Macomb American Legion.
Memorials may be given to the Mission 22 or American Heart Association.
Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb is in charge of arrangements.
