Winona M. Winter, 100, of Macomb passed away at 10:25 a.m. Friday, December 7, 2018 at Wesley Village Healthcare Center in Macomb.
She was born on August 20, 1918 in Bethel Township, McDonough County to James and Florence Teel Thompson.
She is survived by friends Scott and Cheri Allison of Macomb; one sister, LaVerda Wenzel of Phoenix, Arizona and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Norma Jean Gray and Thelma Jackson and one brother, James W. Thompson, Jr.
Winona lived most of her life in McDonough County. She received her B.S. from Western Illinois University in 1956. She taught in several McDonough County country schools and finished her teaching career at Good Hope Elementary School, teaching first grade.
She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, McDonough County Historical Society and Illinois Teachers Association and a former member of Order of Eastern Star.
When she was able she was an avid bird watcher, enjoyed golfing and was active with her farm and flower garden. She enjoyed traveling the world seeing China, Russia, seeing the pyramids in Egypt, Africa, South America, Hawaii and Alaska to name a few.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 13, 2018 at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb with Reverend Dr. Howard White officiating. There will be no visitation. Private burial of ashes will be held at a later date.
