Brian Hale (Hondo) McCormick, 63 of Vermont passed away at 5:17 a.m. on Friday, March 27, 2020 at University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.
He was born on September 9, 1956, in Rushville, the son of Hale McCormick and June (Bucy) Counselman McCormick. He is survived by one son, Matthew McCormick of Chicago, partner Marilyn McIntyre of Lubbock, Texas, one sister, Tammie McCormick of Vermont, one sister-in-law, Lou Ellen Counselman of Topeka, Kansas, six nephews, two nieces, two great-nephews, one great-niece, and his two favorite four-legged buddies, Hondo and Goofy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Ed Counselman and Gary Counselman, maternal grandparents, John and Erma (Horner) Bucy and paternal grandparents, Willis and Lillian (Easley) McCormick.
He graduated from VIT High School in 1974 and from Spoon River College in 1976.
Hondo grew up as a Flatwoods kid in Schuyler County. He spent a lot of time at Casey’s Recreation playing pinball and pool, and he carried those passions into adulthood. He opened The Pool Hall and was co-owner of The Corral. He was a lifelong devoted family man and farmer. He served as a Director on the McDonough County Soil and Water Conservation District Board from 1992 until the present, currently serving as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Board. He was also a member of the Western Illinois Soil and Water Land Use Council. When he wasn’t working, you could find him watching sports or at a blackjack table at the nearest casino. Hondo loved devoting as much time to traveling with family and friends as he could. He enjoyed being around people and was always bringing a smile to someone’s face. No one could forget his loud, obnoxious laugh.
Private graveside services will be held. Interment will be in the Vermont Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
