Coy R. Abernathy, 52, of rural Macomb passed away at 8:03 p.m. Saturday, September 5, 2020 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.
He was born on June 22, 1968 in Macomb to Rex and Jeanette West Abernathy. He married Christina Moore. They later divorced. He then married Bev Carnahan on June 26, 2006 in Branson, Missouri. She survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Chyanna Abernathy; his mother, Jeannette Abernathy; two half-sisters, Jan Abernathy and Rita Pizanowski; three half-brothers, Jim and Gary Abernathy and Ronald Savage; one step-daughter, Alisha A. Stewart and one step-son, Casey Stewart.
Coy was preceded in death by his father, Rex Abernathy; one half-brother, Ricky Savage and one half-sister, Judy Scott.
Coy met his future wife, Bev at his sister and brother-in-laws home on January 1, 2005. Bev came over to visit and watch tv. In walked Coy, unexpectedly to check on his email. Bev still says she was set up. It is one I would do again.
When we drove to Branson, Missouri to get married, we went to our hotel I had booked online. Up on the hill from our turn to the hotel was a billboard for our hotel that was half there and falling apart. Coy looked at me and says what the heck did you get us into! As it turned out it was not a "roach motel".
Coy was an Army veteran, serving four years and later serving in the National Guard. He loved life, enjoyed camping and spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed walking his fur babies. He worked for Western Illinois University as a building engineer.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, September 11, 2020 at Archer-Bethel Cemetery south of Fandon with Scott Jones officiating. Visitation will be held from 12 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb. Full military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Macomb American Legion and Macomb VFW.
Memorials may be made to the Coy Abernathy Memorial Fund.
