Fredrick Ronald, "Ron" Calhoun passed away May 21, 2020 at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born in Macomb on May 16, 1938 and had just celebrated his 82nd birthday. Ron was the last surviving child of Fred and Fern Calhoun. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Georgia Nicholas Calhoun, brothers Russell, killed in World War 2, Howard, and beloved sister Virginia who passed away January 28, 2020.
Ron was raised in a farming family near Prairie City, Illinois and enjoyed all of the things that farm kids did. He was a member of FFA and 4H and active in his church, as well as band and football.
As an adult, Ron worked at Alexander Lumber Company in Bushnell and Cuba Illinois, returning to Bushnell to become a Prudential Insurance Agent. He eventually became an Agency Manager with Prudential. Ron built our family home in Macomb in 1971, and soon after he began the transition to owning an Independent Insurance Agency, resulting in the Allen Burnham Calhoun and Calhoun Pumo agencies.
Ron was a patriot and proud of his country serving in the National Guard in the 1960s for more than eight years. He was also a member of the Macomb Elks Club Lodge 1009, where he volunteered as Santa Claus for many years.
After retirement in the late 1990s Ron enjoyed travel and loved to hunt and fish. His trips to Canada and South Dakota were annual events. He enjoyed a trip with brother-in-law and friend Dave Nicholas to fish for salmon in Alaska, and fishing trips to British Columbia with friend and cousin Jerry Calhoun. Ron also saw the Panama Canal and Hawaii. He said that the trip of his lifetime was his trip to Scotland. He was excited to visit the land where his ancestors lived. He was very proud of his Scottish heritage. Ron relocated to Payson, Arizona to live out the rest of his life. He enjoyed the sunshine, wildlife and birds.
Ron is survived by his children, Audrey Calhoun Vance, married to Randy, Johnstown, Pennsylvania and Anthony "Tony" Calhoun of Payson, Arizona and grandson, Benjamin Vance of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family.
We are grateful to the Mayo Clinic for their exceptional physical and emotional support to us including the clergy, as well as the Water Wheel Fire and Medical Team where donations can be made in Ron’s memory. The donations may be made payable to the Water Wheel Fire and Medical District, and mailed to Tony Calhoun, 258 West Buckskin Rd. Beaver Valley Estates, Payson, AZ 85541-2362. Ron could grow anything, repair anything, and build anything. He loved country music, especially Merle Haggard. He loved his simple life, a cup of coffee watching the sunrise in the morning and a little scotch while watching the sunset in the evening.
