Herbert Lloyd Easley, 91, of Macomb, formerly of Vermont and Industry, IL, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2020 at Wesley Village Healthcare Center in Macomb.
He was born on December 13, 1928 in Fulton County near Vermont, IL to Earl and Irene (Danner) Easley. He grew up in the Industry and Eldorado Township areas and made his home there until moving to Wesley Estates during his retirement years. He attended Vermont High School and was scouted as a baseball pitcher by Bradley University. He chose another life path. He married Elizabeth Ann Cook on March 16, 1947 at her family home in Vermont. She passed away on March 21, 2020, soon after their 73rd wedding anniversary.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, sister, Barbara Jean Easley, an infant son and two sons-in-law, Steve Axley and Rod Beck.
Herbert is survived by his five children: Delores Beck of Macomb, Duane (Gwen) Easley of Englewood Beach, Florida, Ellen Novack of Vermont, Carmen Axley of Macomb and Juli (Ron) Fitzgerald of Knoxville; nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Herbert loved the farm and was a good steward of the land. He farmed in Eldorado and Industry Townships. He always tried to improve the land, used good conservation methods, always trying to make it better than it was before. He and his wife started farming right out of high school. He cared greatly about his livestock also. It wasn’t unusual in the winter to find a baby lamb or pig in a box behind the kitchen stove! His kids enjoyed spending time riding with him to the cree k bottom or big pasture–feeding the many barn cats from his bucket of fresh cows milk–going mushroom hunting was a special time. He could ALWAYS find them. He said he could smell them.
Cremation rites have been accorded. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
