Obituary

Phillip G. Kempher, 81, of Blandinsville passed away at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.

He was born on November 6, 1938 in LaHarpe to Charles Max and Helen Louise Spainhower Kempher. He married Carol Copeland on February 28, 1979 in Fort Madison, Iowa. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Troy Kempher of Blandinsville and Gary (Laurie) Smith of Blandinsville; three grandchildren, Jessica Smith, Ashley (Nick) Schmidt and Tyler Kempher; two great-grandchildren, Kolby Anderson and Cooper Boock; one brother, Stephen (Susan) Kempher of Dallas City; one sister, Phyllis (Fred) Shirey of Huntsville, Missouri; aunt, Naomi Lipper of LaHarpe and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Roberta Schurtz.

Phillip lived in Blandinsville all of his life. He is a member of the Blackhawk Auto Restorers in Burlington, Iowa, breakfast club at Max Melvin’s, Southeast Iowa Antique Auto Club for 50 years, the Pontiac-Oakland Club International and the Blandinsville First Christian Church.

He worked for the Main Street Elevator in Blandinsville and then for the Iowa State Penitentiary from 1985 until his retirement in 2002.

Cremation rites have been accorded. A private graveside service will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at Glade City Cemetery in Blandinsville with Pastor Andy Dressler officiating. The family will meet with friends and there will be a lunch at 12 noon at the Blandinsville First Christian Church on Tuesday, June 23, 2020.
